I have come across this question a number of times during my years in practice so I decided to go into more detail about this topic.
While I do see more and more women in their 30's and early 40's, I also see and hear more from women in their late 60's to early 80's.
Some have been on synthetic hormones for decades and some have just become aware of options. Most complain they cannot have a conversation with their physician because the physicians, for the most part, tell them they are too old to start bioidentical hormone therapy now.
It doesn't matter what your age, we all have the same right to feeling good at any age!
I once had a patient in her 70's who looked beautiful. She told me about the great job he had helping older children learn to read. She was full of life, energy and vibrant passion. Her doctor had told her to stop her synthetic hormone replacement therapy after 25 years, and when she developed horrible hot flashes and night sweats, he told her to take Paxil (anti-depressant).
When she asked him for a better option he dismissed her request.
Fortunately she was not at all intimidated by the doctor and refused the medication. Instead, she went to a bookstore to read up on hormones. That's when she came across my books and scheduled an appointment with my office.
She was determined not to 'curl up and die in a corner' as she put it.
She only hesitated because she was afraid I would say "No" to giving her natural bioidentical hormones because she was too old or maybe because the bioidentical hormones may not be effective on women her age.
She was wrong on both counts.

The doses may differ a bit, but there are no contraindications or limitations to the amount of time of use in any of the large body of scientific data accumulated on bioidentical hormones over the past 20 years.
Salutary effects abound and they are not limited to the young of age.
Feeling better, eliminating hot flashes, night sweats, improving sleep patterns, improved sexuality and mood, help with weight control and enhanced energy levels all measure up to improved quality of life and long term chronic disease prevention.
Because, if you feel better, you will be more active, you will feel motivated to eat better and exercise and the results will add up to keep you younger and limber longer.
So why would anyone limit the use of natural bioidentical hormones as we age? If anything I encourage women to use natural bioidentical hormones even more so with advancing age.
Take my quick survey to see if your hormones are in balance
